How do I(30F) move forward after an argument with my best friend(30M)?

Me and one of my BFFs, we'll call him Bro, had a huge disagreement. We've known one another for 15+ years and often have disagreements, but this one seems irreconcilable.

We were discussing health risks that many suffer with that can be improved. He was sharing, what I thought to be, some harmful views on why their health was at risk, and basically saying that they know what to do to change it, they just need to do it.

His view was that everyone is responsible for taking care of themselves (and their children), and to not rely on their situation changing for the better, so, they have to deal with their current reality. I tried to explain the complex web of barriers, laws, problematic companies, and reasons for someone to be at risk, how that could make it more difficult for different people. In all, the more the odds are stacked against someone, the less likely they are to succeed, so we should be more compassionate and conscientious about that.

His response was basically that he doesn't want to be compassionate because compassion means being sad for others, and he doesn't want to be sad. That the companies, laws, and barriers are gonna improve too slowly, so to stop focusing on them, stop being lazy, and instead he wants to inspire them to do better and encourage them to be more determined to help themselves no matter what.

In my opinion, he tends to avoid learning about many social issues and I told him this will unintentionally harm and push people away by ignoring the nuances of their situation. He basically doubled down by saying that it's too much to learn about the complexity, he doesn't have the time nor energy learn about it, and in the meantime would rather focus on bettering his situation and those he cares about, and donate to charities when he has money, but in the meantime, he still thinks they need to work harder to improve their lives and he'll support them by encouraging them to.

While I understand his perspective, to me, this would be like telling someone who's addicted to substances to stop being lazy and to just try harder to stop taking substances because "they know what they need to do." Or someone struggling at school to stop being lazy and try harder. In certain circumstances that may be true and helpful, but for others it's not. It seems kind of victim-blamey to me in a way.

We're both huge on self-improvement and learning, but he's also huge on self-responsibility. However, the fact the he doesn't want to have compassion for others in this case, nor learn more about why they suffer from what they're suffering from while blaming them for not taking more responsibility for their situation really made me see him differently.

This is something he won't budge on and says we just have to agree to disagree. But I just can't reconcile it. To me, it's such a difference in values that I lost a lot of respect and admiration for him, and am honestly questioning our friendship.

I've tried to be more generous and see how it's not that bad, but I haven't been able to. I don't know how to move forward from this and can't just move on and go back to normal.

Where do I go from here?
