Light blue lines across rivers... ?

I guess, the light blue lines shown across rivers on the hex maps represent rapids, falls, or other features affecting the rivers' navigability... But, do they maybe represent something else?

Does any text or map legend explain it in the Campaign Book or elsewhere?
