I (20M) don’t know what to do about my loneliness anymore
Around a year ago, my girlfriend and I broke up. It was a very toxic relationship as she regularly put me down verbally and occasionally physically abused me. But she was the also first person ever to love me. I was hard, but I knew I didn’t deserve the treatment I was receiving and that my life would improve if I stood up for myself. Well, I ended things and a year later, I’m more miserable than ever.
Over last year, I’ve tried desperately to find social connections. Both romantic and platonic, and both have failed extremely. I have not made a single new friend, in fact I’ve lost a few. Most people seemed angry when I try to talk to them. Romantically, I’ve also floundered. Not much more to say other than I can’t seem to get dates, and not for a lack of trying.
The more I’ve failed, the more I’ve seen the negative side of people. (Maybe it’s just envy). I see the people who are popular at my college. Not in a dumb juvenile way, but people who are genuinely adored. Amongst them are cheaters, rapists, abusers. I’ve become increasingly disgusted by my peers. How they treat other people and what they’re willing to overlook.
Yet I can’t shake my need for social bonds. I’m stuck in this place where I can’t connect with anyone but also can’t shake the need for other people. To me, they’re vile and to them, I’m weird and annoying. But loneliness is eating away at me. My mental health has greatly declined. I don’t know where to go from here. Advice would be appreciated.
