The Daily Check-In for Sunday, December 7th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!

We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!

Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!

I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.

Maybe you're new to r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.

It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!

This pledge is a statement of intent. Today we don't set out trying not to drink, we make a conscious decision not to drink. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!

What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in r/stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.

What this is: A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at r/stopdrinking or have followed the pledges from the beginning.

What this isn't: A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING YOU WONDERFUL WARRIORS!!!!

Thanks to the wonderful u/69etselec69 for hosting last week! Always wonderful to read your posts and this turn at the helm was fun! Once again for the first time ushering you wonderful people through the week in the DCI, my name is Lily Jayne! As I'm writing this, I'm currently at work, after celebrating two months of being a BHT and SEVEN MONTHS with my fiancée! And as you're probably reading this, I'm putting the finishing touches on my first book that will be getting sent to publish before the end of my work shift!! All of the posts this week will have a theme. Today's theme is healing!

I've chronicled my exploits in the past, but in the 998 days since I got on this pony, I've been through the wringer, doused in kerosene and sent through the fires of hell, strapped to a rocket and shot to the sun. The ego death this past summer was fucking spectacular, and it was the culmination of a lot of work, alongside going through trauma and suck while trying to still maintain a positive outlook. My eyes on the prize. That prize was a better life than I ever had or even felt I deserved. But I knew I wouldn't get it if I stayed the same angry person I was my entire life.

To that end, today's lyrics come from Drink Deep by Florence and the Machine: "But the thread that they spun/Was a woman's hair/And the gowns stitched from her tenderest flesh/And the cup that they brought up to my lips/I realized I drank of myself/Yes it came from me//Still I drank deep" Sometimes on a healing journey, you have to realize that you were the demon along the way. I've made my peace with that and moved forward from it.

I didn't have a very privileged background, or at least it didn't feel like it. Being the child of an alcoholic, narcissist, present-yet-absent father, comphet marriage for 20 years...the list goes on for days. It's no surprise I struggled to build meaningful connection. I turned to booze because that's the social lubricant of choice.

I started healing in 2020 when I hit my 40th birthday. This year I celebrated 5 years of my healing journey. But I hit a plateau in early 2023 and realized that I needed to get sober in order continue the journey. I've been digging through the deep shit, and right now, I'm healing my root trauma. The granddaddy of them all: the shame I was given after an incident in childhood which I won't speak to here. That was the first ever time I felt ashamed of my body, or what I did with it. In all of this care and love for others through 42 years of my life, I never loved one person: myself. Summer 2024 in LA, that took on a drastic change with a shroom trip and one hell of an amazing one. I felt nothing but love for myself and my inner child. Ever since, I have showered her with all the love. Giving her all she needs to feel safe, secure and happy has filled my tank and I take that to others now. I found my person, and I love her blissfully. We just got a big girl bed, and that was a milestone two and a half years in the making. But that's for Tuesday when I talk about milestones!

If you don't want to read all of that, or have, today's question is: What are you healing from?

With love, Lily.

I WILL NOT DRINK WITH Y'ALL TODAY!
