Is a wider stitch or closer stitch better for joining a fabric that easily frays

Hi! I’m asking before I run the fabric through the machine and potentially ruin it >< sorry if this is a dumb question!

I’m joining two fabrics that both easily fray when cut, would closer/more stitches tear it up or be more secure? Should my stitches be farther apart to be more gentle?

I’m hoping to learn more about fabric types and the different types of stitching so that the answers come more intuitively…
