The treatments for IBS promoted by elite neurogastroenterologists perpetuate stigma and trivialize the perception of the condition by the general public
Just a thought that came to me ...
How is the general public supposed to take IBS seriously when the top experts who specialize on this condition don't seem to take IBS seriously and offer no cures, no real treatments, only symptom management?
Your family and friends who don't get what it's like to have IBS are not blame. They believe you can cure IBS with a low FODMAP diet, cognitive behavioral therapy and gut hypnosis and if you don't get better it's because of your rigid mind and psychological abnormalities because that's what they're told in the media by the most influential neurogastroenterologists in the world who work with the Rome Foundation and write the ANMS/ESNM guidelines.
These cheap interventions that are selected for cost efficiency are presented to the general public as highly effective, evidence based and backed by science although they only help a small number of patients and only target symptoms with the disastrous consequence that the burden of IBS on the individual patient is completely minimized.
"You can't suffer that much if IBS can be treated/managed with a few lifestyle changes and it's not deadly anyway!" is the implicit message transported by these treatments and apart from a few exceptions - mainly Mark Pimentel - top neurogastroenterologists are to blame for that because they don't even see the lack of better treatments as a problem, it's just IBS after all for them and the most severe cases with an extremely low QOL should be sent to a psychogastroenterologist anyway.
In short: the low-effort treatments for IBS are not only a slap in the face to anybody who is in constant pain or in constant fear to poop themselves but also weaponized against people with IBS and used to portray IBS as a low-burden condition and minimize its heaviness, it's systemic institutionalized violence against a group of people who often lack the resources and background to stand up for themselves and be heard because they are framed as borderline neurotic or apathetic/lethargic hypervigilantes (even if that is a complete contradiction) lacking mental resilience and the ability to cope in denial of their trauma - weak minds in sick bodies
Fight back!
