Is the NIV worse than thr KJV?

So im a baby Christian and I was telling my friends who got me into christ about how I was reading the Bible NIV version because the KJV confused me with all the extra words and shakespearean text. But he said the NIV is like a game of telephone verson cause the TRUE word says thou shall not kill and NIV says you cannot murder. Same msg just different text, so is the NIV better or worse or less accurate to any other version?
