Calling Shane's mom a "tiger mom" is not only inaccurate, it's problematic

I keep seeing people call Yuna Hollander a "tiger mom" in the show, and I need to make a case that doing so is not only inaccurate, it's hella problematic. Please remember that "tiger mom" was a term popularized by a self-hating Asian grifter and prodigy of JD Vance.

I want to emphasize that a white (or other race) mom wouldn't be reduced to such an oversimplified and racialized label simply for her few actions in Episode 1.

It's really important to remember that at the start of the show Shane is only 17-18 years old. If you don't follow elite/Olympic sports, for star athletes to make it at this age their families have made HUGE sacrifices to organize their entire lives around the athlete, even in rich families. It's extremely common that such athletes (of ALL races) have at least one of their parents acting as a chauffeur, manager, and/or traveling chaperone throughout their teenage years. It takes immense organization and dedication to raise an Olympian.

Moreover, when we see Yuna, she is firm with him but never verbally abusive, belittling, or unfair. Even her stern reminder to him that he is carrying the responsibility of POC role model is TRUE and valid. After he turns 18 we never directly see her play any role in his career again – Shane lives alone, and presumably at that point has hired a publicist/agent and manager. (Even in the books, Yuna doesn't ever involve herself in Shane's career decisions directly, only >!the nonprofit camp which Shane and Ilya personally ask her to oversee.!<)

Now, is Yuna organized and neurotic in both the books and show? Yes. Does she imprint these on Shane, impacting his mental health? Yes. Is she a perfect parent? Maybe not, but no parent is, even the really good ones.

But most importantly, none of these behaviors even meet the definition of fierce, strict "tiger mom" that Amy Chua problematically popularized, and no other white or other race mom would get labeled with a racial phrase simply for acting this way. Even if you want to call her an abusive parent (she's not) it still wouldn't be okay to call her tiger mom or oriental punisher or yellow disciplinarian, or whatever.
