Exploring Skilled Migration Options to Australia – Looking for Advice

Subclass 189

Hi everyone,

I’m currently based in the U.S. pursuing a Master’s degree in a STEM field, but I’m starting to explore skilled migration options to Australia and would really appreciate some guidance.

I have 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, and at the moment I’m working in the U.S. under Curricular Practical Training (CPT) in the manufacturing industry as a Quality Engineer. My background is primarily technical, with a mix of software development and engineering/quality roles.

Given the current and proposed changes in U.S. immigration policy, I don’t see a long-term future here. I’m looking for stability and clarity, rather than ongoing uncertainty, which is why Australia is starting to look like a strong alternative.

I’d like to understand:

  • What visa pathways does Australia offer for skilled migrants in tech/engineering roles?
  • Which options might make the most sense for someone with my background?
  • Would pursuing a PhD at an Australian university significantly improve long-term settlement prospects, or is it better to focus directly on skilled migration pathways?

Any insights, personal experiences, or pointers to official resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
