Did he spare my feelings or was I just not girlfriend material to him?

RelationSh!t Advice 💖

Hi, so I had a guy friend in college who I had a huge crush on. When we first became friends, he always told me he wasn’t a “commitment type” of person and didn’t want to date seriously or get married. Because of that, I never confessed my feelings. Later, we started hooking up and my feelings grew even stronger. When I finally told him how I felt, he immediately friendzoned me and said he only saw me as a friend and could only do a friends-with-benefits situation—nothing more.

Years after college ended, he told me he had a girlfriend. I was shocked, but I tried to stay chill since it wasn’t my business anymore. Still, it bothered me that someone who claimed he wasn’t a relationship person suddenly was in one. One day I confronted him about it, and all he said was, “People change with time.”

Now I’m wondering: should I see it as a good thing that he never gave me false hope and was honest about not wanting a relationship with me? Or should I feel embarrassed that he didn’t consider me someone he’d want to date, even for the experience?
