AIO? When thinking of breaking off my friendship with my Best Friend for getting back with her ex?

I’m aware this is a long story, but I truly need an outside opinion. I (19F), and my best friend—let’s call her Laura (17F). She has a boyfriend, Max (17M), and from the beginning, Max and I have never liked each other. We tolerated one another solely for Laura’s sake.

When Laura first got together with Max, I was genuinely happy for her. She had just come out of a very unhealthy relationship, and I believed Max was going to treat her better. I was wrong. Over time, Laura began sharing details of her relationship that raised several concerns.

She often asked for advice, and since I am in a healthy relationship myself, I tried to give her guidance based on my experience. I have also been in an abusive relationship in the past, so I understood what unhealthy behavior looks like. As weeks went on, the more she shared, the more I began to genuinely dislike Max.

One example stands out: they had an argument where Max was screaming at her and would not let her speak at all. I told her that was unacceptable, especially since my own boyfriend would never speak to me that way. Another issue was that Max had a girl best friend, who turned out to be a significant red flag. When Laura was injured and hospitalized, the girl best friend visited only to talk to Max, completely ignoring Laura. My boyfriend and I visited Laura as well, so I witnessed it firsthand.

Later, Laura, a mutual friend named Bruno, and I formed a trio. From that moment, things worsened. Max was clearly jealous and uncomfortable with Laura being close to another boy. He even asked her to call Bruno pretending she needed emotional support just to “test” him. She refused because she knew it would damage our friendship dynamic.

At one point, Max insisted that Laura stop spending time with us at school, even though we were all in the same class. During this time, Laura continued telling us how unhappy she was. One incident made me lose almost all respect for Max: after Laura was released from the hospital with a serious injury, Max sat directly on that injured area. She screamed from pain. In his position, I would have been extremely careful, not careless.

Eventually, Laura decided to break up with him and asked me to come to her place for emotional support. She cried for hours, and I consoled her. Only three days later, she showed up to school happy and announced that they were back together. The whole trio was shocked.

After seeing our reactions, she admitted that during the “breakup,” Max had suggested they should pretend to be broken up but secretly stay together. Meaning: they never actually broke up.

Some time passed, and Laura again announced she wanted to leave him because she realized she no longer loved him, found many of his habits disgusting, and felt mentally drained. We supported her again. Max refused the breakup, telling her, “If you didn’t love me, you wouldn’t be crying.” I explained to her that tears can also represent disappointment, loss, or emotional exhaustion—not love.

She broke up again. We all comforted her. Even our classmates sided with her because everyone knew how poorly he had treated her.

Then, less than a week later, they were back together again.

This time I openly told her I was hurt. Not only did she lie repeatedly, but her decisions were affecting our friendship. Whenever she asked for advice, if I told her honestly what I thought, it came off as negative. If I refused to comment, that was also seen negatively.

Meanwhile, I kept encouraging her to study or hang out, but it felt like I was constantly chasing her. She would always come up with excuses and then complain about her grades worsening. Eventually, I stopped initiating plans and told her that if she wanted something, she should take the initiative.

Now, our trio is essentially broken. Max doesn’t want her to come to my place anymore, and I feel like our friendship is slowly falling apart. I genuinely believe I am in the right, but I still feel guilty for thinking about ending the friendship.

(There was also another situation that showed how hypocritical Max could be. Laura once told me that she met a biker who owned a motorcycle she thought was really cool. He allowed her to sit on it, and she told Max about it later. Max became very upset and accused her of being disrespectful or even unfaithful. However, when she reminded him that he had taken his own girl best friend on motorcycle rides multiple times, he suddenly dismissed the issue and said they should forget it. This double standard was another reason why I grew increasingly frustrated with him and concerned about their relationship.)

So, am I wrong for considering distancing myself or ending this friendship entirely?
