I'm wondering if Liubo was maybe a 3 thousand year old precursor to KillTeam!
So in another thread, I read about this old game called "Liubo" from ancient China, seemingly the rules have been lost to the ages, but there's many references to it in literature...
The game is played on a square board ( look at the images on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liubo ) that looks similar enough to be a skirmish board to me. It was specially the 3D boards that have been found back that pushed me to "wait, this looks like a skirmish game!" (look at the pictures on Wikipedia!)
So both players have 6 blocks (could be operatives) that move around the board and the success of "game actions" are decided by a dice-like mechanic... To me it really sounds like it could be an early version of a skirmish game... ( apparently they even switched to dice in later versions )
And finally, even though this game was superpopular as there's load of statues of people playing it and there are loads of them that were found in graves. So people cared enough about this game to take it with them to the after life! Yet there are "salty" players who claim "It's just based on pure luck!!!" just like with KillTeam/40k :-D
