Need guidance: First dev role in a small finance company with no existing tech team
Hey everyone,
I recently joined a small but pretty old trading firm in the Tri-city area. They’re not very well known, but they do algorithmic trading and I was hired mainly as a Python developer to work on backtesting. But after joining, I realised that they don’t have any tech team at all. It turns out I’m their first official tech hire.
My designation is “Program Developer”, and I’m touching everything. Python, C++, WPF, .NET, databases… basically anything the firm needs on the tech side. I don’t really mind learning new things, but it’s honestly overwhelming at times, especially because I’m a fresher.
In the very first week I was given a major project: a full trading summary / analytics tool in WPF. It’s exciting to work on something so real and useful, but at the same time I’ve never built an industry-grade project on my own. With no seniors, no existing codebase, no one to guide me, I often feel like I’m just figuring things out as I go.
The work culture is actually nice though. It’s chill, people are respectful, timings are strict 9 to 5, and the salary is decent for this area. Not too much, not too less. And because this is a trading firm, a part of me keeps thinking I should stay, because freshers who aren’t from top-tier colleges rarely get a chance to work in the algorithmic trading space at all.
But at the same time, the lack of guidance, the expectation to handle multiple technologies at once, and the constant pressure to “figure everything out myself” sometimes makes me wonder if I should quietly start looking for something more structured where I can learn properly.
I just wanted to hear what others think. Should I stick around and treat this as an opportunity to learn everything hands-on? Or would it be smarter to move to a place with a proper tech team and some mentorship, especially as a fresher?
