Why do you like Honkai Star rail?
I think I've made a post similar a year ago, but with the recent news, and how we often complain about what HSR does less good than other games (I'm not saying it's false, it exists), I want to focus on what makes you stay.
So first, before getting into it, I'll list the thing that I think specifically HSR is doing had without developing.
-Poor story presentation most of the time, even compared to either Mihoyo games or other turn based games(P5X gave more life and it's roughly the same time of game, turn based game)
-Low effort event (Besides some few events here and there that brings something actually interactive it often gives the feeling of logging in for rewards and leaving)
-Marketing choices (I don't need to remind what happened in terms of marketing for 3.7 with my favorite character Cyrene)
-Extremely long, noneffective and uncharacteristic dialogues, even compared to other Mihoyo games only
Now that this is out of the way, despite these problems I have many things that makes me want to play the game, and that explains why I never missed a single day since day 1.
1- The World building is strangely rather simple
I know the explanations in games are way too long, but actually, the factions and all are extremely simple and somewhat intuitive. The main path presented in game except the Trailblazer in the beginning are simple enough for someone to grasp the gist of it. And even if, inside of those paths there are different kinds of factions and all, it is simple enough for us to get them.
And when we present obscure paths such as Propagation, it's actually also pretty cool with how Ominous it is. And if you add to this the fact that we learn always a few more things that make every paths more shaded, long story short, once you know the paths related to a planet. You can both expect things and wonder what things you'll learn about the philosophy attached to those paths.
2-The very reccurent cast and enjoyable characters
I have heard it is similar to wuthering wave, but since I don't play it I can't tell, but GOD it is so cool to have many characters that come and go, but also come back, with a main cast that remains the same, just slightly transformed everytime.
The Stellaron Hunters is a very good first example. It is the group the Trailblazer belonged to and the fate of the Astral express is tightly linked. Moreover, the relation with everyone isn't as negative, except Kafka that brings even more ambiguous thoughts about how the story can go, as she seems to both be extremely important but unarguably dangerous for everyone.
And it also allows everyone to have more depth. The main characters of every regions (Bronya, Yanqing, Robin, Firefly, Herta...) gets more development, but also sometimes some secondary characters (Lukas) for more side stories. And it is so cool to know a character is extremely important and we will eventually see them later.
Except Amphoreus which was the most ambitious region so far, we had a lot of travels in every region and at least came back once everywhere, and having reccurent characters to not lose us mixed with a bit of new ones everytime allow us to have a comfort zone that will tell us how to feel about some characters.
Without forgetting about some that we can learn to like. I dislike Sampo and Sparkle, but the more the stories go, and the more curious I am about them.
Anyway, if you ask me, if the dialogues were more efficient at exposing people's vision, the qualities of the characters would simply be the unarguable best thing.
3-It is not just us waiting for the story, but we reach for it
Besides the beginning of a new region (except Amphoreus), at almost every story, we had a good reason to go here and there, and it feels less about the passive characters waiting for events to happen and more the characters having to do things because of who they are. Yes this isn't something we see absolutely at every patch, but having more active behaviors is cool and enjoyable, so I can enjoy more when the story doesn't wait for us to start.
4-Fight
Nothing much to say here tbh I love having 1-3 main teams after 3 years and building them to last, and it's even funnier now with my Cyrene Dps.
There may be more things that could come into my mind, but ATM these are the things that makes me like HSR so much and is still my favorite game, even if I believe that other games such as Zzz, Wuwa or maybe Genshin are generally better for presentation for example
What do you guys think? What do you like about the game?
