Dealing with ghosting: Strategies for coping and moving on

I got ghosted recently and, wow it hit harder than I expected. One day we were talking like nothing was wrong, the next day silence. No explanation, no “I’m busy,” nothing. If you’re in the same boat, I just want you to know: you’re not alone, and it’s OK to feel upset. I wanted to share what actually helped me get through it, in case any of this helps you.

What it felt like (so you know you’re not overreacting)

  • Confusion: replaying every message trying to find the moment I messed up.
  • Self-doubt: “Was I not interesting enough? Too much?”
  • Frustration: wanting closure but realizing closure is sometimes a luxury you don’t get. All normal. Don’t minimize your feelings.

What I did (practical strategies that helped)

  1. Allow the feeling, then set a limit. I gave myself a few days to be sad/angry/confused I journaled it out but I decided not to let it run my whole week. Feeling is fine; living in the feeling 24/7 is not my goal.
  2. No-contact (and yes, even the “one last text” rule). Chasing rarely works and usually prolongs the pain. If you need closure badly, one calm, respectful message is fine but make it the last. If there’s no reply, assume your answer is the silence itself and close that chapter.
  3. Mute, unfollow, delete. Seeing their stories or profile kept stinging. I muted and eventually unfollowed. Out of sight = less obsessing. If you need to block to stay sane, do it.
  4. Don’t stalk their social media. Trust me. The “maybe they just posted and I missed it” loop is dangerous.
  5. Talk to real people. I told one or two friends what happened. Venting out loud and getting a neutral perspective helped break the spiral of self-blame.
  6. Reframe it as data, not destiny. Their ghosting says more about them (their boundaries, communication skills, emotional availability) than it does about your worth.
  7. Do something physical. I went for a run, cleaned the apartment, and cooked something new. Small wins helped me feel human again.
  8. Learn the lesson, hold the line. If ghosting becomes a pattern with someone, it’s a red flag. I wrote down what I want in a person (communication, respect, reliability) and used that to guide future choices.
  9. Give yourself time before dating again. I let myself heal a bit before swiping. No rush.

If you absolutely must send a last message (template that kept mine calm and dignified):

Short, respectful, no guilt-tripping.

What I keep reminding myself

  • Silence is an answer. It’s not the answer you want, but it’s an answer.
  • People leave for tons of reasons that aren’t about you.
  • You deserve consistency and respect. Don’t lower your standards because someone else won’t show up.

If you’ve been ghosted, be gentle with yourself. Healing isn’t linear some days are fine, some days suck. If it helps, drop a comment with one small thing you’re doing to move forward. I’ll share what worked for me and I’d love to hear yours.
