13 year old dog, diagnosed with cancer - looking for advice..

DOG

A few weeks ago we noticed our dog, had a mass on the corner of his mouth. My partner took him to an emergency vet, where they gave him some painkillers and antibiotics, and advised him to go his usual vet. When they went to the usual vet, they did a needle test on him and sent him home with some meds. This week on Wednesday, they gave us a call and confirmed that it was cancer.

We’re just looking for advice for next steps. They said surgery was an option, but they were not sure if they remove all the cancer, and there’s a chance it’ll come back. In addition, they were not sure if they might need to remove some of the bone, as they don’t know to what extent the mass has grown, inside his mouth.

They don’t know the recovery process, as it’s such bad spot for the mass. And I want to note we both work full time, and would not be able to take off work to be with him everyday.

Right now we have a cone for him, and he’s on meds. My partner has mentioned he doesn’t want to keep cutting him open, and wants to get a second opinion. Chemo and radiation is also out of the option due to the cost. Is there anything we can do to make him comfortable for now? Any one can share similar experience?

The dogs energy level is still high, and he’s eating and still wants to go on walks.
