[Misc] What surprising or unique skincare traditions exist in your country?

Research

Hi everyone!

l've been really curious lately about how skincare differs around the world. Not the fancy K-beauty 10-step routines or trending serums, but the surprising, cultural, or old-school traditions people grew up with. I thought it could be fun (and interesting) to hear what practices exist in different countries.

I'll share mine first! This is TMI so bear with me. I grew up in the Philippines, and when I was a teenager, there was this old belief that when a girl gets her first period, only first period and not monthly, she should soak her underwear (with blood) in water and use that water to wash her face. It was said to prevent acne and give you clearer skin later in life 🙈

I have no idea if this is still practiced today in my country as I haven't been home for more than a decade now. I'm definitely not saying it works but it was something I actually did at age 15 because the older women around me swore by it. It's one of those traditions that sounds wild in hindsight but was completely normal in that cultural moment.

So now I'm super curious. What skincare practices, remedies, or beliefs exist in your country or culture that might surprise people from other parts of the world?

I'm also doing this for research purposes. Thank you!
