New to laptop gaming - what external storage works?

So, I’m new to laptop gaming and just got a Thinkpad T16 with 32gb ram and only 500gb of storage. What external storage do yall recommend to keep the games on? Does that even work? This is obviously very different to Xbox which I’m more used to.
