Meat birds

What breeds do people use for meat birds ? Here in Australia it seems it not too common to raise meat birds, most I think get chicks from a commercial broker, usually being a Cornish cross of some kind, it's been suggested that trying to raise these to adulthood and breed your own is usually unsuccessful, are there any other breeds which have a better survivability and also have a good growth weight to age ?
