Dissapointed with Vox's Backstory
Spoilers Alert in Case Anyone Hasn't Finished S2
----------------------------------
Is anyone else irked by the fact that 'Brighter' pushes murder as the main sin Vox committed during his lifetime (presumably also what got him in hell to begin with)?
Up to that point, we see Vox excel at controlling/influencing/coercing the Sinner masses and even other Overlords into doing his bidding. He does occasionaly resort to direct violence but that's not his main modus operandi or what makes him a threatening villain.
Brighter focuses on his personal killing sprees as expressions of his ambition. There's plenty of other ways they could have shown how sinister and calous he was in life while staying in line with the rest of his character.
Rather than slit the first TV presenter's throat in a back alley, Vox could sleep with his wife, earn her trust so she spills some beans and blackmail the guy for his job. Any number of different ways to represent his backstabbing nature instead of, well, literal backstabbing.
Maybe showing anything more complex would have been too much to fit around the song but they managed to do a better job in Hazbin Guarantee/Trust Us with the sinner girl, why not build Vox's living character on top of that?
There's enough serial killer action in the flashbacks of Pentious and Alastor, as funny as it was to see Vox frag people looney tunes style I guess I was hoping for something different.
(just to be clear, Brighter is still a great song with top notch animation and music, especially the bit where the TV electrocutes everyone)
