pipes banging and tapping old NYC apartment.
I live in an old NYC apartment with one-pipe steam heat. Last year had the radiator valve replaced (the on off valve)., The plumber used automotive gasket sealant-- which was incredibly stupid--it never dries. He also got it all over the pipe and its baked on etc.. on the connection. When the heat is on the radiator smells HORRID! Since I can't take the disgusting toxic smell and prefer sleeping cool I’ve been keeping the radiator valve closed. It worked fine last winter and a few weeks of this fall but recently, the past 3 days,, its been clanking/hammering and also tapping every couple hours or so.. which has been hell.
So I'm wondering, is there any way to keep the radiator “off” without causing clanking, or to keep it open and on and not allow it to heat enough to cause the smell? Or Do I need to have the valve and piping redone with proper sealant or can it just be cleaned?? Someone suggested using a TRV—would that help in this situation? Thanks
