My brother's immaturity will dig my mother's grave
I am so mad at my immature brother. His behaviour is going to put my mother in her grave.
For some context: my brother (30 yo) wasted his whole life. From his teenage years until he was 25 or 26, he was an alcoholic, dropped out of school, and surrounded himself with bad people. My mom tried to make him realise his mistakes, but of course he didn’t listen. She ended up cleaning up all his messes and giving him money for nothing.
Then he supposedly “changed his life.” He started working overseas and moved between different European countries. My mom started having hope in him again, and honestly, so did I. It seemed like he finally put his life together.
But that didn’t last. This summer he suddenly decided he wanted to stay in our home country. We were against it, but eventually we let him do what he wanted. For six months, all he did was spend money. He didn’t look for a job, he didn’t try to buy an apartment with the money he had saved—nothing. He simply existed for six months.
During that time he had an accident with his car (an old and worthless one) and the repair cost $3000. Guess who paid? Correct—my mom.
Now he works at a taxi company, and he had another accident that cost $4000. Again, my mom paid for it. Even though he knows he has no money left, he refuses to go back to his previous job overseas. Instead he just cries, “I want to stay home, I want to live my life.”
My mom is mentally exhausted. She blames herself for everything that went wrong in his life, and she works her butt off just to pay for my brother’s expenses.
I’ve become my mother’s therapist, and it’s draining me. I don’t know what to do or how to react anymore. I’m 12 years younger than him, so whenever I bring the topic up, he brushes me off with, “You don’t understand anything.”
But I DO understand. I understand more than anyone. I understand that I might never go to my dream university because it’s expensive and I don’t want to put more financial pressure on my parents. I understand that if this continues, my mom’s health will collapse. I want my mom—I want more time with her. I don’t want to accept that a grown man’s immaturity could shorten my time with her.
What should i do?
