The difference between video hosting and video sharing
People often use “video hosting” and “video sharing” interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing, especially for businesses.
Video hosting
A video hosting platform stores, processes, and delivers your videos in a controlled environment. You control:
- who can watch
- where the video can appear
- how long it’s available
- how it’s embedded
- brand style and player
- analytics + audit logs
- compliance and permissions
Video hosting = infrastructure + privacy + governance.
It’s built for internal comms, training, onboarding, customer education, and any scenario where you don’t want videos leaking or being publicly accessible.
Video sharing
Video sharing platforms (YouTube, social media uploads, etc.) are made for:
- reach
- discovery
- public visibility
You lose control over:
- download/embedding
- data ownership
- player branding
- distribution context
Sharing platforms are great for marketing, but not for secure internal materials or paid content.
TL; DR
Video hosting = control.
Video sharing = exposure.
Businesses normally need both, but for different goals.
