Unsure how to reject a proposal
Hi, I’m 22F and my mum brought a proposal from a friend of a friend to me this past week. I agreed to meet him (27M) and the family bc my mum was so excited about it all, but in the week leading up to it, I was so disconnected and couldn’t find it in me to be excited about this at all. I prayed istikhara and I’m still really doing my best to find guidance in my prayer and study, but I can’t help but feel like this family is not meant for me.
On the day we first met them, I tried to gather up excitement and get involved in the process bc these people deserve better and so do my family, so I got ready trying to push away the doom and gloom. The guy and his parents came to our house with the family who introduced us and we were given a chance to speak but the longer I spoke with him, the more I felt myself deflating. It just felt like we weren’t aligning, he was so quiet I had to lean into listen, and I was asking all the questions even though they were pretty basic, he didn’t even try to ask those back. He told me he wants to move to the Middle East in the future, and I said I’d prefer to stay where I’ve grown up in the UK. he told me he’s not close with his siblings (opposite of my family), and he likes to meet up with his friends in his free time and he does this everyday, his friends were even calling him the whole time he was at our house.
After that convo I thought for sure he must have felt how much we struggled to communicate (he couldn’t even finish his sentences in response to a question) and would say no to his parents on his own. As soon as they left I was in tears and i said to my parents that we just don’t seem to match and i gave them my reasons why. I spent the next 3 days crying every time I had to talk about this to my parents. it just seemed like the reasons I had weren’t big enough for them. They kept reminding me that I won’t be able to get someone better than this and he matches my criteria perfectly and I shouldn’t rule him out so quick. They say that we should just see where it goes and while I told them it felt like I’d be leading them on when I don’t feel comfortable, they were adamant that I should give it another go. So I agreed, since his mum had already asked to meet up again today.
The meeting today was at his house, and his parents said they liked me and wanted to speed through the whole marriage process. His mum was ready to get a ring made and she asked me to show my wrists so she could see if their family bangles would fit. But at the same time she made some strange comments about girls who were brought up in the UK that I found strange. My siblings spoke to him this time and his demeanour was 180, he was joking and laughing and he’d perfected his answers since my siblings basically asked the same thing. But anything I hadn’t asked before he struggled with. We got home and my family were singing their praises and talking about how perfect he is but after listening to them i felt defeated, since no matter what i said about not liking him, not feeling any connection, or even a wish to get to know him further, everyone was just saying i was being unreasonable and I didn’t have a solid enough reason to say no.
Honestly I’m really hoping to get some guidance bc I’m going to keep praying istikhara and other duas, but if there’s any suggestions I’m open to any and everything. Most of all I’d appreciate some advice on how to convince my parents that I don’t want this and how to do so without hurting anyone’s feelings in the process.
