I observe that many students might work through the IA till the last minute feeling frustrated, losing structure and momentum.

Here is every thing you need for your IA. I am going to break down the different stages of IA writing.

First, choosing your IA topic and at the planning stage. (Continue scrolling if you've completed this stage)

  1. They should be very personal 🔍, as you have to show interest in your IA writing in order to gain marks. It's also a good experience for you to delve into things you might be interested in.
  2. Think realistically what you can really achieve 🤔. At the very end, you might have to narrow down your topic based on time frame. It is OK to be not ambitious at all, but focus on what you can do. If you strength is analysing Mathematical data, do it. If you are better at doing secondary research and compiling information, do it. Field data collection can range from days, while lab work can last a week to even a month if you fail.
  3. If you choose field work and experiments🧪, be strict with controlled factors — consistency is everything. Expect unpredictable data outdoors; results may not show a clear pattern or correlation. Be ready to propose alternative hypotheses and explain different possible causes. You’ll need to critically evaluate irregular results — this shows depth, not failure
  4. If you choose a survey 📊, make sure you have a diverse sample (>100) — avoid bias. PLAN your data analysis methods (e.g. chi-squared, Spearman / Pearsons correlation) before collecting data, Surveys often rely on secondary literature to strengthen your argument. Managing responses takes time — stay organised!
  5. I don't recommend students doing to what extent questions, you have to be good at organising counter arguments and comparing different factors if you are doing "to what extent". Unless you're analytical enough, if you haven't been a good essay writer, better stick to "examine the effects of ... / does XX influence / Compare the differences between ..."

Secondly, is to plan your IA structure.

Students might just hop into IA writing immediately without seconding the structure, ending up being off - focused, feeling anxious right before the deadline. Therefore for each session, you would need to know which materials you need in writing.

Introduction 15% (providing background of location) , Methodology 15%, Results 10% Analysis / discussion 30-40% (combined with literature review if needed) Recommendations 10%, Conclusion 10%

I would just write an outline of different paragraphs first without adding in statistics or data first, so I would know what additional research I would need to enhance my essay.

The following document can provide you will what you need to include in your structure, whether you're trying to hand in the paper or not.

✅ Step-by-step guidance for each section

✅ Clear structure to follow

✅ Logical flow for examiner-friendly writing

✅ Detailed points to include in every part of your IA
