Undergrad looking at KPMG – Audit vs Deal Advisory vs Corporate Finance?
Hi everyone,
I’m an undergrad finance student planning to graduate in 2027 and I’m really interested in starting my career at KPMG, but I’m trying to understand the best path.
Right now I’m looking at three lanes: • Audit (traditional entry route, then maybe internal move later) • Deal Advisory / TS / Valuations • Corporate Finance / M&A / Debt Advisory
My long term goal is to build strong modeling and transaction experience and eventually move into investment banking or private equity in Chicago. For people who are currently or formerly at KPMG 1. How realistic is it to start in audit and internally transfer into Deal Advisory or Corporate Finance after 1–2 years? 2. If you could do it over again, which group would you target out of school for the best exit opportunities and learning curve? 3. Are there specific offices/practice areas that are stronger for transaction work (esp. Chicago or nearby)? 4. What actually stands out on a resume/during interviews for these groups (certs, modeling, internships, etc.)?
Any honest advice or “if I were you, I’d do ___” perspectives would seriously help me plan the next couple of years.
Thanks in advance!
