In 2025, using tap-to-pay with Google/Apple Pay should be an option on Metro buses.

Metro buses

Having just been to Boston and used the T system, it's seriously such an upgrade when public transit meets users where they are instead of expecting users to know esoteric payment systems in advance. If somebody who doesn't typically ride the bus decides they would like to start doing so, having any barrier to entry is a problem. While the integration with the transit app described here sounds nifty and all, why not just have a tap to pay terminal at the front of the bus like other cities do? Is there something I'm missing that makes this impractical or impossible?
