I feel that, with [redacted], Carol doesn't have a specific individual that she needs to rescue
This is a theory post. Only including one scene from the latest episode below (hidden under spoiler tag).
(switching "redacted" with a spoiler tag) I feel that, with >!Helen gone!< (E1), Carol doesn't have a specific individual that she needs to rescue.
I feel that the story is unfolding fine but it's missing this directedness, maybe on purpose, of the typical "I need to save my wife/husband/child" motive for the main character. Carol is trying to do the noble thing, of saving everyone, and I think what feels empty for some of us is that this motivation isn't toward a specific individual. We haven't been introduced to any of Carol's other close friends/relationships so making things as they used to be, for Carol, is still >!saving Helen!<.
This isn't a critique of the show but rather a possible feature. If I had to guess what we will find out is that Helen can still be saved somehow. In E6, we saw >!the others role-playing in a casino!<, so if Carol asked the collective, she could >!isolate Carol's thoughts/consciousness in someone!< and then attempt a rescue. Others have speculated that a person can be disconnected when he or she is near death.
This implies that the show will possibly explore >!switching bodies!< since >!Helen's body is dead!< and the ethics involved with having more consciousnesses than bodies. Another obvious theme could be about how do you let someone go if >!there's a chance you can bring them back!<
