GE PVD28BYNFS Freezer Issue - Ice Build Up

Hello. I am having issues with our freezer not keeping items cold enough. Ran diagnostics and it returned a Defrost System Error of 0200, "Freezer defrost heater on for max time. (Check FZ evap thermistor fault 0004)”.

The first picture is what it looked like when I was able to take off the Freezer Evaporator Cover and the second photo is after I unplugged and used my hair dryer for 30 minutes on it.

I am trying to determine if it is the heater, thermistor, or both. I ran the Freezer Defrost Heater Test (Test 60) and I went to measure the voltage and resistance on the main control board. Using the instructions in the repair manual:

"To check voltage at the below points use the freezer defrost heater test 60 from Service Mode.

J3 Connector on Main Board

• Pin 1 (orange) to pin 2 (red): 66Ω

• Pin 1 (orange) to pin 2 (red): 120 VAC"

It is difficult to read the pins on the board insofar as trying to get good contact. What I believe I am seeing in only 8 VAC and an open resistance which make me think it is the heater.

Could it only be the Thermistor causing this or am I correct in my troubleshooting?

I am hoping I’m missing something obvious as the $8 thermistor is much easier and cheaper to replace than the $85 heater element.

Thanks in advance!
