Did people in ancient times know that feeding water to a newborn baby could kill them?

How did they determine that was the sole cause of a baby’s death? Considering the factors back then like diseases, weather conditions, lack of food/nutrition. Did they attribute the death to diseases? How would they be able to know that water directly and solely killed the baby?
