Possible plot hole?

It’s made known in episode 6 the hive are eating people because it’s a source of nutrition and that, even by doing this, everyone will be dead within 10 years.

But then they say they can’t harm any living beings. Not even plants.

Well, by assimilating everyone in the world, they’re basically starving them!

Can’t figure out the logic behind this.
