What’s the crack with EV’s then?
I frequently monitor the car market out of curiosity and I’ve never been particularly interested in EVs but the more I read into them the more they make sense. I’m not a petrolhead and I have my own driveway with the capability of having an EV charger installed if I wanted.
From what I’ve seen EVs have been depreciating a lot in recent years, probably because of uncertainties about the future and questions around battery depreciation. But correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t there far less that can go wrong with an EV compared to a standard petrol or diesel car?
There are far fewer moving parts, usually a single speed transmission, no timing belts or chains and no need for oil changes. This ticks the first box for me when it comes to ownership costs.
The other thing that seems to worry people is battery health. But if I just want a car to drive around in and I’m not chasing thrills, just purely to get from A to B, wouldn’t it make sense to PCP an EV and just hand it back after three years? The depreciation of the car and the battery is then not your concern and becomes the dealership’s problem.
Sure you are stuck in a loop of constantly financing cars, but this is where the EV model makes sense to me. It is cheap to charge with a home charger and the cost of charging is a fraction of what you would pay for petrol. Fuel is a cost you can never avoid when owning a car and I factor this in when calculating monthly payments towards a PCP on an EV where you can potentially fully charge for around five pounds.
What am I missing here? Besides the thrill of driving, which I’m not bothered about, EVs seem to make a lot of sense. I’d be keen to hear people’s horror stories and have my thoughts challenged.
