Hi! I'm new to godot and so to help myself learn the engine I figured I would try and recreate Sonic 1 for the Sega Genesis. The issue is that my character doesn't stop building momentum, leading to this. I have tried many fixes and I do not know what to do. My code is as follows:

extends CharacterBody2D

export var gravity = 50

onready var \_animated\_sprite = $AnimatedSprite2D

var crouching = ''

func \_ready():

	floor\_max\_angle = rad\_to\_deg(43)

func \_physics\_process(delta):

	if not is\_on\_floor():

		velocity.y += 50

		if velocity.y > 1000:

			velocity.y = 1000

	if not is\_on\_wall():

		if is\_on\_floor():

			if Input.is\_action\_pressed('jump'):

\_animated\_sprite.play('jump')

velocity.y += -1500

		else:

			if Input.is\_action\_just\_released('jump'):

velocity.y \*= 0.5

		if not is\_on\_floor():

			if Input.is\_action\_pressed("jump"):

\_animated\_sprite.play("jump")

	else:

		pass

	var hdir = Input.get\_axis('walk\_left', 'walk\_right')

	if hdir > 0:

		\_animated\_sprite.flip\_h = false

		if is\_on\_floor():

			if not is\_on\_wall():

if not velocity.x > 1000:

if velocity.x < 700:

\_animated\_sprite.play('walk')

velocity.x += 3 \* hdir

else:

\_animated\_sprite.play('run')

velocity.x += 11 \* hdir

elif velocity.x > 1000:

velocity.x = 1000

else:

if not velocity.x > 1000:

velocity.x += 15 \* hdir

elif velocity.x > 1000:

velocity.x = 1000

		elif is\_on\_wall():

velocity.x = 0

velocity.y =0

		else:

			velocity.x += hdir \* 10

	elif hdir < 0:

		\_animated\_sprite.flip\_h = true

		if is\_on\_floor():

			if not velocity.x < -1000:

if velocity.x > -1000:

\_animated\_sprite.play('walk')

velocity.x += 3 \* hdir

else:

\_animated\_sprite.play('run')

velocity.x += 11 \* hdir

			elif velocity.x < -1000:

velocity.x = -1000

		else:

			velocity.x += hdir \* 10

	elif hdir == 0:

		if is\_on\_floor():

			\_animated\_sprite.play('idle')

			if velocity.x != 0:

if velocity.x < 0:

\_animated\_sprite.play('skid')

velocity.x += 25

elif velocity.x > 0:

\_animated\_sprite.play('skid')

velocity.x -= 25

if velocity.x < 0:

velocity.x = 0

\_animated\_sprite.play('idle')

			elif velocity.x == 0:

while Input.is\_action\_just\_pressed("crouch"):

pass

		else:

			pass

	move\_and\_slide()
