For many parents, the practicum can seem like an insurmountable challenge

I'm taking a moment to vent about the overwhelming challenges I'm facing as I strive to complete my online Master of Social Work (MSW) program at George Mason University. While I acknowledge that things could be worse, it's hard not to feel frustrated when I'm so close to achieving my goal, yet seemingly insurmountable obstacles stand in my way. With only a practicum and one class left to complete, I should be excited to be nearing the finish line, but the harsh reality is that I'm struggling to make ends meet.

As a single income household, since I lost my job while on maternity leave, and with the added financial burden of childcare costs, it's becoming increasingly difficult to see a way forward. The practicum placements, which are a crucial component of the program, are all unpaid, which means I would not only have to pay for childcare, but also forgo any potential income, making it a daunting and unaffordable prospect.

The cheapest babysitter in my area charges over $25 per hour, a cost that is simply unsustainable for me. To make matters worse, I've been ineligible for scholarships so far, and the program has a six-year cap, which is looming over me like a deadline. I've even tried to supplement my income by working as a DoorDasher, but it's just not enough. What's most disheartening is that the social work field, which is supposed to be dedicated to supporting and empowering vulnerable populations, seems to be inaccessible to moms, people with kids, and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds due to its prohibitively expensive nature. I recently had to turn down my dream practicum placement because we simply cannot afford the childcare costs, which was a heartbreaking setback.

I'm left wondering how others in similar situations are managing to make it work financially, and I'm eager to hear their stories and find some semblance of hope and solidarity in this struggle.
