Should I stay on SAVE or switch to old IBR for PSLF? Advice needed

Advice

Hi everyone, I’m trying to make sense of my federal student loans and could use some advice from folks familiar with PSLF strategy.

My situation:

  • Loan balance: ~$40,200 (Direct Loans, ~4.29-6.28% interest)
  • Current IDR plan: SAVE (but I understand it’s being phased out)
  • Last AGI: $54,464
  • Current income: $72,512
  • Family size: 1, single
  • Next IDR recertification: 2027
  • 32/120 PSLF payments

My question:
I’m debating whether I should:

  1. Stay on SAVE until it’s replaced, or
  2. Switch now to the old IBR plan (10% of discretionary income) to lock in a lower payment based on my last AGI.

I’ve read that:

  • Switching to IBR could protect my lower payment (~$328/mo vs ~$495/mo if using current income)
  • If I stay on SAVE until it’s replaced, my payment might change depending on new rules
  • Any new borrowing after mid-2026 could force me onto the new RAP plan
  • PSLF credit counts on both SAVE and IBR

I’d love to hear from people who:

  • Have switched from SAVE to IBR (or vice versa)
  • Have thoughts on whether it’s better to lock in the lower payment now
  • Can comment on potential risks of being forced onto RAP if I wait

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience or advice!
