My sons illness got us evicted. He wants to be homeless. I need advice.
My son was diagnosed with Schizophrenia at 17. He has been relatively stable (it fluctuates) for about 10 years, and has always lived at home. He has still had delusions, anger issues, and mostly no insight into his illness, will not participate in therapy, but didn't have any severely disruptive behavior. He definitely wasn't "nice" but could still be loving and kind. He was always very entitled, and would yell at us for not buying new cars, call us losers etc....but he has some delusions about hidden riches and being rich, so the nastiness was kinda isolated to those topics. He celebrated birthdays, occasional hugs/smiles, etc.
However, It seemed like within the past few months a switch flipped, and he just became something I can't describe... just completely empty. He expresses no kind feelings for anyone, except for anger and hate. He also began being extremely verbally abusive and treating everyone he encounters with contempt.
Not surprisingly, I received a notice in November that my son has been doing disruptive things around our apartment complex. According to complaints he has threatened people, sleeps in the lobby, looks in people's windows, etc. I have no details on the specifics, but it's dozens of complaints, so I'm sure some are true.I tried to speak with him about it, but he just denies, tells me to "fuck off" or "I didn't do anything illegal" or "sorry, sorry, sorry" but no actual apology (more like an aggressive sorry if that makes sense.)
All I could do was hope he would stop. I tried watching him as much as I could, but I do work, and he won't listen to me at all.
Well, he didn't stop, and I was served an eviction notice. I spoke to the office manager who luckily agreed to just let me move to avoid the eviction.
I have nowhere to live for 30 days, so we have to move to a hotel which is obviously going to be more stressful. My son says he wants to be homeless, and he is not coming. He has no job, no family, and we live in a large city, and definitely will not be medication compliant without me "forcing him"
He is on a monthly shot of Invega but I always have to argue or threaten him to get him to take it. I don't want to threaten him with hospital, etc. I just don't know what else to say. I have tried saying it would improve his life, or I want him to feel better, etc. but he has ZERO insight into his illness...and will get furious if I suggest he has anything wrong with him.
He says I have "Munchausen syndrome, and that I am delusional and want him to be sick. He also says he is "aubanistic" , and he won't explain what this word means, other than he can't be arrested.
He also seems to have lost all empathy. When I tell him he is scaring people by looking in their windows or giving them dirty looks, he also tells me to "fuck off" or laughs, or says it isn't illegal, etc. I have cried and told him we are going to get evicted and I don't have anywhere to live, but he acts the same way...zero empathy. If you try to talk more than a single sentence he just walks out the door.
I tried begging and pleading mostly, but I'll admit that I have gotten overly angry, and said mean things (ex. it seems like you don't even care about anyone, you're a jerk, how can you treat people like this? etc.) It's very difficult because he is abusive, and I fall into reactive abuse, because I don't feel like I can't set boundaries and leave him for obvious reasons. Again, not an excuse, just explaining our relationship is strained and I am not being my best either. He thinks his father is trying to harm him, so no go on talking to him either, and no one would let him stay anywhere because he literally isn't following basic rules.
So, what do I do?
He isn't "a danger to himself or others" exactly because he hasn't actually tried to hurt anyone or himself.
He is terrified of the hospital and has a complete breakdown if it is mentioned (covers ears, screams incoherent sound, runs away)
And, as mentioned, is verbally abusive, refuses to respect others fears/privacy/etc.
And says he is not moving to the hotel, and wants to be homeless in his car, which is in my name (if that matters in some legal way, but it is his car)
Should I let being cold and alone in his car teach him a lesson? But would that even work on a delusional person?
Do I let him "be homeless" because that's what he wants, and mentally ill people deserve autonomy? Even knowing he will stop taking his meds?
Or am I letting his unwell mind torture him, and I should force him to go to the hotel somehow? (Where he will most likely get us kicked out of too)
It feels like an impossible situation.
Please be kind. I'm not trying to abandon him/not help him. I'm just overwhelmed, lost, and.traumatized.
