In regards to Buzz's prank during Kevin's solo

Everytime I watch this movie (every Christmas), I cringe at this scene; why tf is everyone roaring with laughter? Is this any more than perhaps slightly amusing to people, or am I just a stupid trout-sniffer? The uncle, too, says it's hilarious later during Buzz's apology. What am I missing??
