Client pulled a knife (RBT) on me, and I can’t decide if I should continue the case.
I have been working with this client for 3 months now. Things were amazing at first, and the pairing process was going great, then it started to shift. I should add that our team suspects an underlying mental health condition, but the family is hesitant to get one completed.
To make a long story short, my client talks about murder a lot and draws pictures of dead animals. She will be really sweet one moment, and then there is this big shift and she’s a completely different child. We were playing and laughing Friday, her mood shifted, and she pointed at me and called me a bad name. The day before, she pulled a knife out of a butcher block and turned toward me.
When the knife incident happened, I immediately called my supervisor and he pressured me to continue session even though I was very uncomfortable. I stayed for another 20 minutes, but I couldn’t get through session. I was so stressed out. I also didn’t feel supported by the family, so I ended up leaving.
All knives and scissors now have to be put away during session, but I don’t feel like the response in the behavior plan is adequate as far as her concerning vocalizations about murder go.
I’m not feeling super safe or supported. Am I being a big baby about this? Is it reasonable to ask to be transferred to another case?
Thank you in advance.
