What scares people about being asked questions these days? It almost doesn’t matter what the question is. Political, personal, a bit confronting. The content isn’t the real trigger. It’s the way we’ve taught ourselves to hear it.

People seem ready to take offence before the conversation even begins. A simple “Why’s that?” or “How do you see it?” gets interpreted as an attack on who they are, what they believe, or the group they belong to. Pride plays into it. Ego even more. There’s this twitchy defensiveness that kicks in when someone feels exposed. As if admitting “I’m not sure” has become some sort of moral failure instead of the most honest, human response you can give.

You see it most clearly in politics. Those Senate inquiries are a perfect snapshot. Individuals who should be subject-matter experts. Some elected, some hired specifically for their knowledge. Yet when they’re questioned, half of them dodge and weave like the truth might burn them if it gets too close. It’s evasive, it’s unprofessional and it sets a standard that filters downward. If our national leaders treat every question like a threat, why would the rest of the country behave any differently?

And then you’re at a weekend barbecue. You ask someone what they reckon about a topic that’s floating around the news. Before you’ve even finished the question, they’re bracing for a fight. Answering with heat. Like you’ve somehow challenged their identity by inviting them into a conversation. It’s as if the national tone has seeped into everyday life. We’re all on edge. All performing defensiveness instead of speaking with one another.

What’s worse. I’m seeing it in primary schools now. A kid asks a genuine question. Another student rolls their eyes or snaps back defensively. Sometimes even the teacher shuts them down. “We’re not talking about that.” “That’s inappropriate.” And just like that, curiosity gets stamped out. The conversation doesn’t disappear though. It simply walks elsewhere. Usually to a place with less guidance and fewer guardrails. That’s where you end up with little pockets of kids forming their own echo chambers. Same as adults online. Same as Parliament on a bad day.

When people can’t ask questions openly, they go looking for others who’ll tolerate the conversation. Which is natural. But it breeds confirmation bias. If we only ever talk with folks who nod along, we never stretch our thinking. Never challenge the angles we’ve become comfortable with.

We need to find our way back to a national tone where disagreement isn’t treated like aggression. Where curiosity isn’t a threat. Where a question is just a question, not a coded insult or a political grenade. Because without that, we lose the very thing that helps a country grow. Honest conversation. It’s the only way we end up somewhere better than where we started. If we keep shutting conversations down, we’re only narrowing the path forward and that’s a future none of us can afford.
