Trying to understand
Let me know if this isn't a good space for debate, but I wanted to talk about this with someone.
I don't understand how being transgender makes sense. I'm not just trying to rage bait, and I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm truly just trying to understand it, and from what I've seen and heard, there are things that just don't make sense to me. I'll try to ask what questions I have, but I don't think I have them all in my head rn. I'm sure I'll think of them in discussion.
Isn't acceptance better than making a physical change? Besides just the fact that most people likely don't have the money to pay for transitioning, what makes it different from essentially wearing makeup? Makeup doesn't bring out your true form. It only hides it. Personally, I prefer how people look without makeup on. They just look more real to me, and I think that makes them more beautiful. Makeup is a way to conform to this weird societal standard of aesthetic perfection. Like every imperfection on your face must be hidden, or else you'll be bullied. How terrible is that? Is it not better to just accept that you are a human being with raw and imperfect features? Similarly, would it not be better that you accept the body you're born with? Many things would be confusing, and seem out of place, and maybe you don't feel you fit inside your own body, but is that not just societal expectations putting pressure on you to conform? I'm not saying you need to appear in any particular way. Quite the opposite, actually. If you're born as a "man" but feel more like a woman, why not just express yourself in a way that feels appropriate? No it won't be popular, but why should it? Shouldn't you value self-acceptance and self-expression? Even if you're born with mixed up parts, why not just allow yourself the freedom to express yourself in the way that fits you best, instead of trying to change and conform? Makeup basically does the same thing, and I think of it quite similarly. What I don't understand is why no one (that I've heard of) has killed themselves because they couldn't use makeup, but people very commonly commit suicide due to not being able to transition.
I know it may seem reductionist to compare transitioning to makeup, and I have no doubt I'll be corrected about that, but I hope you can see the point I'm trying to make.
Again, I truly mean no offense to anyone, and I just want to understand better. Hopefully I can find someone with the patience to help me out here.
