A Modern Declaration of the American People
Thoughts on how this could be improved? Would a petition be effective in current times?
The Issue
A Petition for Accountability, Sovereignty, and Renewal
When in the course of human events, a nation’s government ceases to uphold the duties for which it was entrusted, it becomes the right — and indeed the obligation — of the people to speak, to assemble, and to demand redress.
We, the citizens of the United States of America, united not by party but by principle, do solemnly declare that the bond between the people and their government has been weakened by neglect, division, and failure.
We issue this petition not in anger, but in resolve; not in despair, but in determination; not against our nation, but for it.
Guided by the moral authority of our forebears and the enduring truth that all just power derives from the consent of the governed, we publish these grievances and demands to restore integrity, sovereignty, security, and justice in these United States.
I. Grievances
- On the Erosion of Border Security and the Failure of Immigration Enforcement
A sovereign nation maintains the right to defend its borders and uphold its laws.
Yet the United States government has failed for years to enforce its immigration laws vigorously, clearly, and consistently. Millions who enter lawfully—waiting patiently, paying fees, respecting the process—are placed at a disadvantage compared to those who enter unlawfully.
The first act of crossing a sovereign border without permission is a violation of law.
The American people have witnessed:
Record-high unlawful border encounters surpassing 2 million in multiple consecutive fiscal years (U.S. Customs & Border Protection data).
Communities overwhelmed by housing shortages, strained local services, and fiscal burdens they did not choose.
A lack of unified national policy, resulting in chaotic enforcement, contradictory directives, and politically motivated neglect.
This failure threatens national security, public safety, economic stability, and the integrity of lawful immigration.
A nation unable to control its borders is a nation unable to safeguard its future.
2. On Sanctuary Policies and the Confusion of Laws
We further declare that sanctuary jurisdictions—where local authorities refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement—undermine the rule of law and jeopardize public safety.
The American people ask:
Why do cities defy federal immigration law without consequence?
Why does the federal government permit local leaders to obstruct national security responsibilities?
Why are lawful citizens expected to comply with the law while officials and jurisdictions selectively ignore it?
Such contradictions encourage further unlawful entry, weaken enforcement, and tell the world that U.S. law is optional.
The law must speak with one voice, or it speaks with none.
3. On Declining Public Office Responsibility
Public office was once regarded as a sacred trust.
Today, Americans see a rising culture wherein misconduct is excused, accountability is rare, and partisan self-interest eclipses duty.
We witness:
Leaders who treat federal law as suggestion rather than obligation.
Officials who place donors, ideology, and foreign pressures above the needs of American citizens.
A growing belief among citizens that leaders abandon responsibility without consequence.
When public office loses honor, the people lose faith.
A government that excuses its own misconduct teaches the nation to do the same.
4. On Judicial Leniency and the Diminished Protection of the Innocent
Judges exist to uphold the Constitution, preserve public order, and protect the innocent. Yet in many jurisdictions’ judges grant leniency to violent offenders, reduce sentences for repeat criminals, or release dangerous individuals with insufficient safeguards.
The consequences are borne not by the judiciary, but by communities:
Increased recidivism
Lowered deterrence
Rising fear among law-abiding citizens
Erosion of faith in the justice system
While justice must be fair, it must also be firm. A society that punishes the lawful and excuses the lawless inverts the very meaning of justice.
The innocent must never be sacrificed to protect the guilty.
5. On Foreign Influence, Entanglements, and Divided Loyalty
The American people recognize the right of foreign nations to pursue their interests; but no foreign interest must supersede the welfare of American citizens.
Yet our nation has witnessed:
Increasing evidence of foreign influence within domestic political debates.
International entanglements that receive priority over domestic stability.
Political decisions shaped by external pressures rather than national needs.
These issues demand inquiry, transparency, and forthright accountability.
A nation that cannot distinguish its own interest from foreign influence cannot call itself sovereign.
6. On the Cost of Living and the Fading American Dream
The American Dream—home ownership, secure work, upward mobility—has become unattainable for many.
Nearly half of Americans cite cost of living as their greatest struggle (Visual Capitalist, 2025).
The middle-class baseline in many cities exceeds $120,000–$140,000 annually, yet median income remains around $74,500 (The Fulcrum).
A government that spends extravagantly abroad while its citizens struggle at home forgets its purpose.
The prosperity of a nation must begin with the prosperity of its people.
7. On the National Debt and Fiscal Negligence
Our national debt surpasses $38 trillion (Peter G. Peterson Foundation).
Credit agencies have issued warnings and downgrades.
Future generations inherit a burden they did not create and cannot undo.
Debt without restraint is theft from the future.
8. On Excessive Foreign Aid While Americans Go Without
In FY2023, foreign aid commitments totaled nearly $100 billion (USAFacts).
Meanwhile, Americans face homelessness, insufficient healthcare, aging infrastructure, and financial insecurity.
Foreign assistance may be noble, but charity must begin at home.
A government that neglects its own people forfeits moral authority abroad.
II. Principles
We reaffirm these truths:
Government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed.
The duty of public office is service, not ambition.
Sovereignty requires secure borders and the rule of law.
Justice must protect the innocent above all.
A government must put its own citizens first.
III. Expanded Demands of the American People
- Restoration and Enforcement of National Sovereignty at the Border
We demand that the federal government fully reclaim operational control over the borders of the United States.
This includes:
Strict enforcement of all existing immigration laws, applied uniformly and without political obstruction.
Immediate and mandatory removal proceedings for individuals unlawfully present, with prioritization on those who entered in direct violation of federal statute.
A national policy of non-tolerance for unlawful entry, ending the cycles of catch-and-release, loopholes, contradictory policies, and selective enforcement.
Uniform standards for all states and cities, ending the era of policies that undermine federal authority and place citizens at risk.
A full audit of immigration expenditures, border operations, and federal agencies to assess waste, inefficiency, and political interference.
For the preservation of national sovereignty, the law must prevail at the border as it does within.
2. Abolition or Federal Correction of Sanctuary Jurisdictions
We demand a single, unified system of immigration enforcement that cannot be defied by local decree.
Accordingly:
Sanctuary policies that obstruct federal law must be overturned, either by federal legislation or judicial clarification.
Local officials who deliberately refuse cooperation with federal authorities must be held accountable, as no public servant is above the law.
Federal funding may be conditioned upon compliance, ensuring that states and cities do not simultaneously depend on federal resources while actively opposing federal enforcement.
A republic cannot operate when its own jurisdictions selectively nullify national law.
3. Accountability and Consequences for Government Officials Who Neglect or Defy Their Duties
We demand that public office once again carry weight, dignity, and consequence.
Therefore:
Elected officials who willfully ignore, obstruct, or defy federal law must face legal and civic consequences, including censure, removal mechanisms, or federal review.
The oath of office must carry enforceable meaning, with oversight bodies empowered to respond to misconduct or negligence.
No official shall prioritize personal or partisan interest above the constitutional mandate to protect the citizenry.
A government that excuses dereliction invites decay.
4. Judicial Reform to Restore Justice, Stability, and Public Confidence
We demand that the judiciary fulfill its constitutional mandate to protect the innocent, uphold the law, and preserve public safety.
This includes:
Clear consequences for judges who repeatedly issue rulings that undermine constitutional protections, public safety, or federal law.
Oversight mechanisms to review judicial misconduct or persistent leniency in cases involving violent or habitual offenders.
Greater transparency in judicial decisions, especially when sentencing deviates from statutory norms.
A call for the Supreme Court of the United States to address matters of judicial overreach, conflicting lower-court interpretations, and constitutional erosion more decisively and promptly.
Justice, to be just, must be firm, consistent, and loyal to the Constitution.
5. Term Limits and Structural Reform of Congress
We demand a Congress that reflects service, not entrenchment.
To this end:
Term limits must be established for both the House and the Senate, reducing the influence of careerism, lobbying dependence, and generational stagnation.
No office should be held so long that the representative becomes disconnected from the people or beholden to permanent power structures.
Public service must once again be temporary, principled duty — not a lifetime occupation.
Historical financial disclosures show that long-serving members of Congress often experience personal wealth growth far exceeding what an ordinary American earning the same salary could achieve, underscoring the need for term limits to prevent the accumulation of influence, privilege, and distance from the economic realities of the people.
Regular renewal of leadership safeguards the Republic from the stagnation, privilege, and distance that arise when power remains too long in the hands of the few.
6. Strict Regulation of Lobbying, Foreign Influence, and Political Manipulation
We demand stronger protections against all forms of domestic corruption and foreign influence.
This includes:
A comprehensive ban on foreign governments, foreign-backed organizations, and foreign-aligned lobbyists influencing U.S. domestic policy.
Severe restrictions on political donations and lobbying from entities with foreign financial ties.
Mandatory disclosure and public reporting of all meetings between elected officials and any foreign agent or lobbying interest.
A binding “cooling-off period” for former politicians and senior officials before they may enter the lobbying industry.
A nation cannot serve two masters — especially when one is not its own.
7. Economic Renewal and Relief for American Citizens
We demand that the prosperity and stability of the American people take precedence over international obligations.
This requires:
Legislation aimed at lowering the cost of living, promoting energy independence, supporting domestic industry, and expanding pathways to homeownership.
Reform of tax structures that overburden working families while protecting entrenched interests.
Policies that strengthen the middle class, restore mobility, and protect American jobs from foreign exploitation or policy neglect.
The American Dream must again be a reality for all who work for it.
8. Fiscal Responsibility and National Debt Reform
We demand a return to responsible stewardship of the national treasury.
This includes:
Statutory spending caps to prevent uncontrolled debt accumulation.
A fiscal accountability framework requiring balanced-budget considerations for major legislation.
Transparency in national spending, including audits of federal agencies notorious for waste or mismanagement.
A nation that consumes its future betrays its children.
9. Rebalancing Foreign Aid to Prioritize the American People
We demand that foreign assistance be reframed as a secondary obligation to domestic stability.
Thus:
Foreign aid should be reduced where excessive, redirected where ineffective, and justified only after domestic needs are met.
The United States must not continue to invest billions abroad while Americans face homelessness, economic hardship, and declining infrastructure.
No foreign government should receive funds that compromise U.S. autonomy, neutrality, or moral standing.
Charity abroad must never eclipse duty at home.
IV. Declaration
We, the People, declare that the time for silence has passed.
We declare that government must once again be servant, not master.
We declare that the rights, safety, prosperity, and voice of American citizens must rise above the noise of foreign influence, political rivalry, and bureaucratic failure.
With firm reliance on the justice of our cause, we pledge to defend and restore an America worthy of future generations.
Let this stand as a peaceful petition, a righteous demand, and a call to renewal.
