Are meme coins the Beanie Babies of the 2020s?
I grew up in the 80s (yes, I'm old, so get off my lawn! :D ), and remember all the hype around Beanie Babies. People bought them like serious investments, and I remember seeing couples on the news on the floor of divorce courts splitting their "investment" of Beanie Babies. Eventually, the company quit making new ones, and the price promptly plummeted for most of them. The only thing really "special" about them was the scarcity of certain limited editions, and once the hype was done, they were just another stuffed animal. I see the same correlation with many meme coins. There is scarcity at the moment, but I don't really see any utility to them long term, other than the current hype. Admittedly, I have not invested in any of them, so my knowledge is very limited, but they seem to just be a big scam like so many other fads (Beanie Babies, Garbage Pail Kid cards, Pogs, Tamaguchi Pets, etc.). How does everyone else feel about the long-term longevity of the meme coin craze? Do they have the staying power necessary to invest in them long term, or will they just be another fad that we look back on with fondness in 20 years?
