Why did my murse ask about domestic violence?

Hi hello nurses. I was recently admitted into a hospital in banff alberta after a car accident. The first thing she asked me was if i had issues with domestic violence. It kinda caught me offguard as it was a very random question (to me atlseast). So whats the reasoning for this, does anyone know?
