In need of advice
I’m a 30M, UK-based. I’ve been in a relationship with my GF (26F) for just over two years. I adore her and love her unconditionally. She has exhibited OCD like traits for the entire duration of our relationship. I term it traits because she does not have a formal diagnosis; she has never sought the review of a Consultant Psychiatrist. That said, I’d say with some degree of certainty that she has exhibited OCD of a ‘Checking’ Type the whole time. She’d frequently have a bedtime routine that involved specific checking of her phone, almost in a ritualistic way. She’d frequently check my use of technology in her house (asking me the same stereotyped question every time I used my Laptop - ‘Have you updated it? Which Wi-Fi have you connected it recently?’). In September 2025, things took a dramatic turn. She was due to go on month of travelling around Asia with her longtime friend. Whilst on the long haul flight over, she described having suddenly began to experience distressing thoughts revolving around the idea that she’d cheated. Soon after, she sent me extensive voice notes and messages detailing what she felt constituted her episodes of cheating. Typically, this would be seemingly innocuous events (“I think I may have made eye contact in a club”), but magnified 10x in her mind. Eventually, she returned home within days, finding the thoughts too distressing to continue her travels. The scariest aspect about this period was that, when I tried to reason with her that these thoughts likely stemmed from a new form of OCD, she became combative and stated that it was her belief that all of the events were true; that I should not attribute her thoughts to her mental health.x She then decided to return to what I understand to be a General Taking Therapist (not OCD specific, and, remember, she does not have a formal diagnosis), with whom she’d had prior contact in 2021 when she experienced some sort of episode related to the COVID pandemic (which I now think was a ‘Contamination’ type, though she described little of this time period to me). Weeks went by and she’d occasionally (probably once to twice per week) send messages of a similar nature as before relating to cheating. However, we went out, we saw friends together, we did couple things. An improvement, or so I thought. Fast forward to Mid November, and, suddenly, her behaviour acutely changed. She began to stop calling me daily (as was so typical), and began to appear evasive (skipping things we’d organised with friends). I attributed this to her being busy with work commitments. Then, at the start of December, she announced to me that she wanted to break up. Her reasoning was ‘I need to exist and be confident on my own, I rely on you too much’. I was dumbfounded. I struggle to process this and feel in limbo. Our relationship was one that all our friends looked into with envy. Her friends thought we were great together. My friends thought the same. My friends and family simply cannot understand how this came about. And, neither can I. Had we ‘grown apart’ over a period of time, as I’ve experienced in prior relationships, I could begin to reconcile it. But I can’t hear, because my string inclination is that her lack of mental clarity due to her unmanaged OCD got us here.
It’s now been one week, and I’ve received no contact from her at all.
I’d appreciate any kind words of advice. Thank you.
