Why do people hate the tau?

I'm new to 40k and just finished painting my forst strike team and have ordered the combat patrol. Anywho I've found online people hate the tau why is this arre they op? I've found people talking about it but it's mostly just meme and don't really make sense. If I participate in a tournament will people not like me?
