Spo Benching Kel’el Ware After His Breakout Makes Zero Sense. If they going to do this Ware, might as well trade him a package for Giannis then.

:vice_logo: Discussion

I really don’t get what Spo is doing with Kel’el Ware right now.

Ware was in the middle of a legit breakout. Dude was stacking double-doubles, playing harder, running the floor, contesting everything. Exactly what the staff told him to do when they said his motor needed to improve. He took that personally… and then gets benched for it?

That’s insane to me.

You keep hearing it’s about “winning,” but come on. If this version of Ware doesn’t help you win, then what are we even doing here? What’s the actual plan for developing young talent if the second they start popping, they get pulled back?

And think about it from Ware’s perspective for a second. You’re a rookie. You hear all the criticism. You raise your intensity. You start producing. Fans start hyping you up. The league takes notice. Then suddenly your minutes vanish and your role is shaky again. That’s a confidence killer for any young player.

So yeah, I’m not surprised his last few games haven’t looked great. You can’t mess with a guy’s rhythm like that and then act shocked when he’s a little off.

At this point, if they don’t actually believe in his development, then just be real about it. Package him and go all-in for some superstar like Giannis. Don’t half-develop him, kill his confidence, and call it a win-now move at the same time.

Ware earned those minutes. He earned the chance to play through mistakes. Benching him after he finally figured it out just feels backwards.
