2K clear on acrylic

I have school automotive project im working on, im handpainting the engine cover with a design using acrylic. My instructor is telling us to use 2k clear, but wouldn’t that mess with the acrylic since its urethane? Ive seen numerous suggestions of wet sanding first but its gonna sand the design away. Any help would be appreciated
