Biab/Nail breaks

Ok so I'm no professional, I do biab on myself and my sister. I have been for a couple of years now. They last pretty well. Just one issue I seem to always have is not the biab chipping/breaking, but my real nail underneath seems to break and split a few ways. I just switched from square to almond and it's gotten worse. Anyone got any suggestions how to fix this?
