Gunther is the perfect final John cena opponent:

I genuinely think that Gunther is the best final opponent for John cena and before you say “a younger talent should retire cena!” Or “cena should be retired from someone he has history with!” I promise you that those would’ve been worse and let me go into why with each point.

The most common argument is that “cena should be retired by younger talent!” And the most common example thrown around is Carmelo Hayes. I promise you, this would’ve actually damaged anyone in their 20s if they retired cena and here’s why. Would it be a big win/moment for them? Yes absolutely but the issue is that… it would’ve been too big. It would’ve been too big for wrestlers in Nxt because they will still be stuck in Nxt after retiring cena and as for main roster people, it also would’ve been too much. Let’s look at Hayes. Currently he is in the midcard feuding with the miz, and I’m sure he’s gonna win the us title eventually. Here’s the thing, if Hayes retired cena, everything after that would’ve been a downgrade, what would Hayes realistically do after retiring cena? He would stay in the midcard which is a giant downgrade for the person who retired one of the greatest of all time. And honestly Hayes should be in the midcard, he’s not ready for the main event scene yet and should have a good us title run before he goes to the main event scene, he’s only 31! Don’t rush it! It would’ve been like if Drew McIntyre retired Shawn Michaels in 2010 and just went back to the midcard. That would’ve sucked right? That’s what would happen with Hayes and it also happened to theory and sikoa. Those two did nothing with beating cena and theory just stayed in the midcard and solo kept losing after beating cena. Beating cena doesn’t automatically make you a star, you have to use it to make you a star. Theory and solo didn’t and neither would Hayes. It should be someone younger but it shouldn’t be someone too young to the point it’s too much to handle. And that brings me to the next argument.

The other most common argument is that it should be someone cena has history with and I’ll just sit here and tell you why it shouldn’t. Not only have we seen those matches already like “cena vs Orton” or “cena vs punk” but it just doesn’t fit cena. I know that flair and Shawn didn’t go out against young guys but it fit them better because it just feels right for cena to go out against a young talent putting them over with all the people he’s buried, flair and Michaels didn’t bury many talent, cena buried a lot of talent so going out putting over a young talent just feels more right because orton and punk and even edge would get literally nothing from retiring cena, it would just be a cool moment but do nothing in the long term. Cena should go out putting over younger talent to make up for all the people he’s buried and for some reason, to these haters, Gunther is not young talent… even though he’s 38 and is gonna wrestle for another decade. Gunther is the perfect opponent because he is a young talent but he can handle the burden of retiring cena since he is a big star, people say this would do nothing for Gunther and sure Gunther doesn’t NEED this but it would hurt anyone else who retired cena. I do like la knight as an option because he needs more help than anyone else but Gunther is the best option. In fact here’s another hot take.

Cena should lose his last match. There I said it. After years of burying talent, him going out putting over that talent just feels right. It would be a fun moment for him to win but it would hurt Gunther in the long run, him going out losing to Gunther, showing us why Gunther is one of the stars for the next decade and then he can get his retirement speech just feels right. I know sting won in his retirement but sting didn’t bury so much young talent, cena did so him going out making up for that is the best option. That being said he should NOT tap out! If I booked it, cena passes out instead.

So yeah that’s why I think Gunther is the best option, if you just don’t like Gunther then fine. That’s your opinion but imo he is the best option to retire cena and the only other option I’m fine with is la knight.
