How far away from FIRE am I? (6 months unemployed)
At 30 years old after a brief career in tech, I got laid off six months ago. During the formative years of my career, I saved and invested aggressively, living with family while I dedicated most of my $190k/yr salary to maxing out my Roth IRA and 401k as early as possible. But for most of my early career, I was barely making $30/hr.
This is why asking peers and seeking financial help from tech forums like Blind don't work well... everyone there appears to make over $600k a year and suggest having 10MM to retire.
Job searching has proved uneventful with multiple final rounds ending in headcount yanked, no offer, and sometimes rescinded offers. I'm going to run out of unemployment benefits in one month, and the burnout is real when gunning for these high-paying roles.
My net worth is $850k. I have $280k in my 401k and Roth IRA combined. I have $560k in taxable brokerages. Everything is invested in VTI/VXUS (10% VXUS). Cash is in a money market FDLXX.
Part of this is bargaining as rationalization, but the burden and dejection of the job search makes me wonder how far from FIRE I really am. I've read a few books on the topic and try to think about my annual expenses against the 4% drawdown rule. Asked GPTs about monte carlo simulations and all, but I'm looking for candid, human opinions and advice.
I'm wondering if I can consider a kind of semi-retirement or barista FIRE approach yet, where I take a lower paying job but still have my benefits covered.
